Already 8 months

Time flies...
With a house, a job and a baby, there's few time for fun !
And now is one. I have not posted in a long time but that does not mean nothing happened !
Paul is already 8 month old and owns 2 teeth !
I changed my job for one in the CNES (National Center for Space Research). Not bad, huh ! ;-)
It's been three months and I love it. The bad part is I have to leave my son all day, makes me sad... Anyway, it's good he's seeing other people and kids.
that's life : busy !

In memory of Olivier

Wednesday 26th will stay a very sad day in our memory. Olivier was part of our family for five years before he and my sister decided to break up last January and follow their own tracks. However, we had remained in touch and kept good relationships.
He found death on his path on wednesday. He was 29th. He was driving his motorbike on the way back home. He loved this bike so much. He was not a Fangio on his bike and was careful on the road.

He was the kind of guy who didn't like the idea of getting old. He liked to party with friends too much to settle down. He'll never be 30. A wink to the time which flies. He will stay our James Dean forever.

He was a very kind and attentive person. Friends and family were very important to him.
He would do anything to help, surprise, and be loved.
He had been very involved in the preparation of our wedding. He's the one who made possible the idea we had for our wedding invitation and he helped all along the previous year to help us be ready for the big day. For that we'll always be thankful.

He and my husband were very close. We used to be neighbours when we lived in Paris and we spent many nights together, listening to music, going to concert, drinking beers or whisky, chatting of bikes or politic.

We'll miss him very much.
RIP Olivier

Third quarterly week-end in Auvergne

This week-end was our third quarterly week-end. The meeting point was in Clermont-Ferrand.
F et M had taken a train from Paris as we were driving from Toulouse.
We arrived at the castel of Charade, a very beautiful castel from the 17th century, very-well renovated where we were sleeping the two nights. We picked up the keys and should have been fetching F et M at the railway station around 10pm but the SNCF decided otherwise...
And the train arrived at 1am !!!
We still had the dessert together at the castel : strawberries and champagne !!!!!! Luxury !!!
We had the suite with two bedrooms, a little livingroom and downstairs, the dining room with a french pool.

The following morning, we had a giantic breakfast ! Delicious breakfast prepared by our hostess, the lady of the manor with home-made yoghurt and jams, yummmmmy !
In the early afternoon, we went for a walk on the Puy de Jumes and Coquilles, a very nice walk from bottom to top under the forest and ending with a beautiful view of all the old volcanoes.
We stopped to have lunch on top of it, in the best spot ! We had everything : tomatoes, radishes, hams, bread and... wine !!! We could feel jealousy from the other walkers !!! ;-)
We finished the afternoon on top of the Puy de Dome where the panoramic view is incredible. Unfortunately, the cafeteria there was closed.
We stayed for a while watching the paragliders taking off the Puy de Dome. Wahoo, they have guts !!!! Special wink to Caroline !!!

We then had dinner in "L'auberge de la Moreno" at the Col de la Moreno. Some of the dishes were delicious !! Not all of them, unfortunately... but not bad either !!

On sunday, we visited two mountain lakes. On the shore of Lake of Guery, we had lunch, and we had a walk around the Lake Pavin. Beautiful place ! Our short walk was granted by a good beer and fresh orange juice.
The landscapes from Lake Guery to Lake Pavin is just amazing !!! And there was still some snow and people skiing !!!

Let me bring up the two people of the week-end : Gerard, the paraglider of the Puy de Dome and Antoine, the kid of the mountain !! Our superstars !

And thank you to our hostess of the château de Charade for her kindness and good advice.

Disappointed.... but...

There should have been a conference with Pierre Rabhi (see previous article) downtown Toulouse yesterday. Should... that's the problem... The conference was cancelled, I only knew about it when I arrived at the FNAC (some bookstore)... such a shame...
That's when I do compulsive shopping. And I'm happy to have bought a cookbook from Louis Audoubert (a famous mountain guide from here) with local receipes, like Cassoulet !!!

Pierre Rabhi

Thanks to my friend M., I discovered this genius man.
I encourage you to read his books and understand his philosophy.

I remember once when I was young, the teacher asked us to write a little essay about how we see ourselves in the future. I wrote : I see myself as a vet in a farm with a cow for the milk, some hens for eggs, a horse, rabbits and a kitchen garden to grow my vegetables. Being a vet, I could heal my animals.
I became a computer engineer... Something obviously went wrong somewhere !!!

Here is a link to know more about Pierre Rabhi and his actions over the world ( in french sorry) :

Renovating old piece of wood furniture

Some time ago, we bought an old cupboard. The wood was pretty damaged and eaten by worms.
The second-hand dealer had treated it but we could still see some sawdust inside sometimes.
I'm now looking for some advice on how to deal with this.
What I already did is sandpaper it (with the machine) to remove the wax and varnish so that the pesticide can get in. I'm not very satisfied by the result... The machine left some striated traces and partially removes the color... :-(
I treated afterwards anyway. But now, I'm not sure what to do...
I think I will fill the wormholes with hardwax then put a colored wax everywhere to try to standardize the color everywhere.
If some sawdust re-appears, I will treat locally.

Anybody experienced with this ? I need advice !!

"Mutant message down under" Marlo Morgan

This is the title of a book I just finished reading (the french name is : "Message des hommes vrais au monde mutant").
The book is a novel (most probably fiction, but that is volontarily unclear) which tells a story about the experience of an American woman who would have spent three months in an Aboriginal tribe, she called the real people. In my opinion, the book is not to be read first level. If this is a true story or not is not that important... Though, I understand the aboriginal people don't like to be "falsely" described... and making money out of their culture does not fit either in the picture...
But anyway, leaving the polemic aside, this is a nice book. It has you travel far from your modern country, opening your mind to "primitive" culture, and make you think about the relationship between the human beings and the earth. I read it with the same eye I read the Bible (I'm not saying this book is a Bible !!!). That Mother Mary is a virgin or not, that Jesus walked over water is true or not, does not matter to me. Are you called a naive because you believe this is true ? To me, the message is important.

Anywho read this book, let me know what you thought about it !

Blisters aches and happiness

That's the result of working in our new home for four days !! :-)))

Today is a big day

Today at 2pm, we'll have the keys of OUR home.
That means something !! :-)

Movie : Lord of War

Very interesting movie. The subject is the weapons business around the world from richer countries towards the poor ones. You can cynically call it recycling...
I extracted just that sentence from the trailer as an amuse-bouche :
"That's one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11? "
Go watch it. Two thumbs up.

Solaris 10 graphic problem :Tombé en marche

Well, you know that's the french expression to say you didn't do anything and it started working...
Yes, it worked...FYI, the parameters I used are :
Xsun :
Video Device : Intel I810/815 (4Mb)
Video Driver : I810
Resolution : 1024x768 - 256 colors at 75Hz
Screen size : 17-inch

I did two things which I don't know if that saved me :
I installed xf86-4.4.0-video.pkg.bz2 (SUNWxf86r and SUNWxf86u), I found on the web.
And electrically stopped the PC.
Rebooted, BINGO : gave me I810 choice.

Now, I feel better. :-)

Installing Solaris 10 on a PC

Ok, there I am. I installed Solaris 10 (3/05) on a PC at work. :-)
The installation went very smoothly, was very easy, not much different from the previous ones.
But... yes, there is a but...
I seem to have a problem with my graphic...
Basically, it doesn't manage to start the Xserver.
The PC is a Fujitsu Siemens Xs 1171 with onboard graphic chip Intel 810E.
This chipset is supposed to be supported with Solaris 10 using Xorg.
I tried to xorgconfig but it still fails with error saying there is no driver for agpgart...
Surfing the net, I found some agpgart driver for Linux but not for Solaris...

Well, the driver should be included in the version of Solaris 10 Express 11/2005 that just went out. I haven't downloaded it yet and I will try it soon.
But I feel pretty frustated no to be able to make it work with the earlier version.

Anybody knows how to work this around ?
Help welcome

"Joyeux Noël", the movie

I truly recommend it. The movie takes place during the first world war somewhere in the trenches in the north of France. On December 25th 1914, German, Scottisch and French soldiers celebrated Christmas together in peace. This is a true story. I didn't know about this before I read about the movie. That is really worth saying it.

Riots in the suburbs

Maybe you heard about those events happening in France lately.
To all my friends outside France, don't worry about us. We're fine.
We live in a quiet area of Toulouse and nothing bad happened near us. (not yet ;-) ).
However, I feel really sorry about what's going on.
I'm sorry for the people living in those areas, we shall say ghettos. That makes me realize that we are from the very lucky world, born in a relatively easy family,well-educated, living our childhood in a peaceful village. That we can call happyness.
We have been somehow protected.
Later, I had been living in the suburbs of Paris, a place well-known, or I should say, bad-known as being a dangerous area. I never had a problem all the time I had lived there. Several years...
But that's only my experience here and then.
The fact is, when I arrived in Toulouse, I had the possibility of living in Empalot. Not knowing before what it was, I went to see the apartment. I had not been in the hall yet that I knew I didn't want to live there... Insecurity feeling...
So what ? Had it getting worse in the meanwhile ? Or had I jumped a social class since then ?
Anyway, it is an emergency that we, citizens, become aware there are other citizens living there who need a decent place to live, who need a better education, who need employement, who need help. And even if I condemn the damages down to all public and private properties, people there need to hear we heard them and we will do something for them, and DO it, and do it SOON.
And people, old or young had always been more stupid in a crowd.
Stop burning, start talking, hurry acting.

Karate

I think this will be my first post on karate, which is funny considering it's taking a fair part of my free time... As you might have seen in my description, I am a karate black belt.
I've been practicing for 5 years... My first sensei was Alain Toubas, instructing in Paris' ex Temple des Arts Martiaux (became Dojo de Grenelle since). He's seventh Dan.
When I moved to the US in San Francisco, I trained in Pine Waves Karate Academy in Fremont with sensei Al McGaughey, who was 4th Dan. And finally, I am currently practicing with sensei Lilian Froidure in the Shaolin Martial Arts Academy in Balma, who is 5th Dan.
I also did a training with regretted Michael Millon (world champion) in Loches.
Every one of them brought something different to my practice. Which is why I believe, it's important that you practice with different senseis.
One will be more into katas, the other in self defense, the other more in kumite, armlocks...
Each has one's favourite part and bring you new tips, new vision... And trust me, each time I started with a new sensei, I felt like I was back to white belt at some point.
But that's what's interesting with martial arts, you study all your life, always learning.

Wonderful Internet

Internet is probably one of the best things which happened to human beings in the last century (outside washing machine and dishwasher of course !!).
I mean, it really is a wonderful way of communication. People meet their lifepartners everyday on the web. Meet people they'd never be aware of. And of course keep in touch with their closest but farthest friends. It actually is my case. :-)
One of my best friend is in UAE, we've known each other for 6 years now, and we've been in the same country only for a few months in the beginning !
Of course, both parts need to get involved somehow to keep the relationship alive but it needs much less energy than writing paper and pencil, it is instantaneous with chatting (or VOIP) and free of charge beside your ADSL subscription.
So what are you waiting for ?? Get connected ! Lol !!

Week-end in Septimanie

That title will for sure irritate my friends from Languedoc Roussillon.
For some bad reasons, the politics want to change the historic name of Languedoc Roussillon to Septimanie (ugly word...).
Anyway... we had a wonderful week-end in the Perpignan area.
Perpignan is a city lying between the Mediterraneen sea and the Pyrenées, next to the Spanish border. The proximity of the mountains and the sea give to the region some beautiful attributes. The coast is also known as the Côte Vermeille on the French side and the Costa Brava on the Spanish side.
We're in Catalogna ! The regional (still well alive) language is catalan (same spoken in Barcelona).
Catalans are very proud of their region (and they ought to !), supporting their well-known rugby team USAP, and fiercely showing the blood and gold colors of their flag.
You can find some very good wines like Collioure or Banyuls.
And artists like Picasso, Dali, or Matisse knew about these place.
Dali even made the center of the world from the Perpignan railway station.
Perpignan's architecture shows lots of pink marble, from pavement to walls.
History is everywhere in the area, beautiful castles and royal residences.
Nature is not left behind either, we, for example, visited the Big Canalettes caves, wonders of water, rocks and time in Villefranche de Conflent, which is also a medieval city.

Being so close to Spain, we should definitely learn the language !!
A big thank you to our friends and their families where we have been wonderfully welcomed.
Gracias !!

Amazing ! Chapeau bas.

My grand-mother is 83-year-old. She is twice a great grand mother !
She thought it sucks that her grand-children were living too far away from her, especially those with kids, i-e, her great grand kids.
So she decided to make the trip to visit my cousin and her young son.
Which means :
- Drive to the railway station in Evreux (Eure)
- One hour trip from Evreux to Paris.
- Change railway station in Paris (from St Lazare to Austerlitz)
- Eight hours trip by night train
- Arrival in Gap (Alpes Maritimes) the following morning
A twelve hours journey !

What irritated me was, when she took her ticket for the night train, they gave her a berth on the top !!! Could you imagine a 83-year-old climbing to her berth in a rolling train ? Non sense...
She had the chance to be able to change her berth to a more appropriate, but still !!!
There should be some kind of reserved berth on the bottom for the elder or disabled.
That would be social progress !!

New PC configuration

Since we need to buy a new PC (ours just reached its limits !), I decided, it would be more fun if we build it from scratch instead of buying it all set up.
It also gave me the opportunity to figure out what was out in the market and learn more about the state of art of technology.
First, to define what are our needs, I need to say, the PC will barely be used for playing although it might sometimes... I want it to be a tool for working : installing several OS's (Linux, XP, Solaris), sharing files with the laptop over the OS's, building a Wifi network at home, surfing the internet, mailing, writing letters, designing with Photoshop, building movies from home-made videos, and so on... and as silent as possible !
Here's what I ended up with :

Peripherals :
- Flat screen : Viewsonic VX912 (19")
- Mouse/Keyboard : Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100
- Wifi router : Linksys WRT54GS with SpeedBooster
- Wifi PCMCIA card (for the laptop) : Linksys WPC54GS with SpeedBooster

Composants :
- BareBox : Textorm 69U6
- AC : Textorm DB-killer PW-385
- Motherboard : Asus A8N-SLI Premium
- CPU : AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (2200 Mhz - s939) 0.09µ BOX Venice
- Memory : 2x512MB Corsair PC3200 1024Mo Value Kit
- Video card : Leadtek Winfast GeForce 6600 GT Extreme 128mo
- Hard Disks Drives : 2x WD 250Go 7200 RPM S-ATA special edition
- DVD burner : Plextor PX-716A

All comments welcome !

Peindre ou faire l'amour (To paint or to make love)

We went to see this movie yesterday. It is a french movie produced by Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu. The movie casts actors like Daniel Auteuil, Sabine Azema, Sergi Lopez.
It is a traditional french movie. The situation is inspired of the every-day life and is favourable to reflexion.
The story is about a fifty-five or sixty-year-old couple. After their only daughter leave for her studies and he is retiring, how will they live just the both of them ?
They live in a flat in a city surrounded by mountains (Grenoble ?).
She paints on her free time and she meets one blind guy Adam (Sergi Lopez) during one of her painting session in the countryside around. He has her visit a house to sell nearby.
She and her husband decide to buy the house. The blind guy and his girlfriend are neighbours.
The story is about these two couples.
I wouldn't like to say more about the story, because, you have to see it by yourself...
Anyway, it is an interesting thought about how you live your sexuality after 40 years together, how sometimes you get involved into situation you never considered, how your non verbal communication can impact on the others behavior, how the way you behave can influence the situation, how you can find yourself into a new situation (even at sixty !) not knowing how to react... Very interesting movie ! I hope it will be produce in countries outside France !

First Quarterly week-end in the Loire Valley

Seb was organizing this first week-end since our move to Toulouse. The choice of the place happened when we went to see the excellent Feydeau play : "Les fiancés de Loches", easy enough to translate... Loches is a city in the center of France. Not knowing Loches, we'll have a look at it ! Then, he looked for a place to stay. A ferme-auberge, I don't know if this exists outside France... Basically, farm-inn : dinner bed and breakfast at the farm. I LOVED that week-end ! The four of us just get along too well !! And it was also cultural !

Saturday afternoon, we visited the Chenonceau Castle, a beautiful castle from the Loire Valley, built over the river Cher.

The castle was built from 1513 by Catherine Briconnet and Thomas Boyer over a medieval castel owned by the Marques family. From the initial castel, they only kept the dungeon and a well.
The castle was also owned by King Francois the First, Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Medicis, Louise de Lorraine and Madam Dupin.

Diane de Poitiers built the bridge over the Cher which makes this castel so particular and ordered some beautiful gardens along the river. She was the lover of King Henri II, whose wife was Catherine de Medicis. After the death of King Henri II, Catherine took back the castle from Diane. She had her own gardens built and a large gallery over the bridge where she could give giant parties.

Louise de Lorraine was King Henri III's wife. She stayed in the castle after his death, having the place covered in black and herself in white like the royal mourning colors ought to be.

Finally, Madam Dupin, was keen on the intellectuals of her time : Diderot, Rousseau ... Jean-Jacques Rousseau stayed there for a while, raising her kids. He was really fond of her !! Like the inhabitants of the village who saved her and the castel in the french revolution.

The castle is fully furnished and you can also admire some paintings from masters like Rubens inside the castle.

After Chenonceau, we paid a visit to Loches. The city is less famous for Feydeau's Fiancés than for two influent women. Loches is the city where Joan of Arc met King Charles VII and convinced him to go to Reims. Loches also hosts Agnes Sorel's grave, Charles VII's lover, famous for her beauty. It's medieval castel from this time has a dungeon, 37 meter-high, the highest from this time in France. The dungeon had been a prison, until late, in the early 20th century.

In the evening, we had a wonderful dinner cooked by Mrs Pasquier, our host for the week-end. Tomatoes and eggs from their hens, goose (their) with zuchini's gratin and potatoes. All vegetables from their kitchen garden. Cheeses from their cow's milk, and plum pie from their plumtree ! MMMMmmmmm !!

On sunday, we started with a huge breakfast with jams, butter, and milk from the farm, bred and croissant. :-)

After breakfast, we employed ourselves to make our own butter from fresh sour cream, and we made it !!! Then, Mrs Pasquier took us for a visit of the farm and first to the milkroom where we managed to manually milk a cow. We had a wonderful chat with Mrs and Mr Pasquier on agriculture and breeding and the way they drive their farm. It was really interesting !

I really recommend you pay a visit to them. They are really moving, friendly, nice and passionate people ! Stop by Chatillon sur Indre in the Bigorn Farm !

We finished the week-end by having lunch in Saint Hyppolite at the rib steack festival and a little visit of Chatillon sur Indre before driving back to the Chateauroux's railway station.

It was a WONDERFUL week-end. I almost forgot to tell, that we of course played Yam each time we could !!

Quarterly week-end concept

We have this concept with two friends (two wedding witnesses). It happened when all four of us were living in Paris and we thought we didn't see each other often enough. Although we were living in the same city, we couldn't manage to see each other regularly. By chance, it happened we were in a restaurant when we had this thought. Immediately, we decided to get together the first thursday of each month and try a new restaurant, rolling the choice of the restaurant over the four participants. It worked perfectly. Fixing the time is the key thing.
Anyway, when we moved to Toulouse, we could not do this anymore, so we thought of another way of doing it with the new constraints. It had to be a week-end but once a month was too much...
With the four of us, seeing each other every three months was not too constraintful and in a year, we'd roll over the organization.

Militant for no Katrina anymore

First, I want to say to my american friends and those living there, how much I think about them.
What happened is just terrible... And I was deeply moved. I didn't know anybody living there, but if you had friends or family overthere, I hope they're safe...
Also, I must say, I feel also very angry. Because I think human beings is partly responsible in the going-wrong of the climate. As some of you know, I am deeply into the preservation of nature (in one word : ecology) and I believe there's something we can do about it.
So please, people, be aware that all the wrong we're doing to this planet, we're doing it to human beings. So, let's remind what every single one of us can do on an everyday basis :

- Do not waste water
- Limit your trash
- Save energy
- Buy food from bio-agricultural origin
- Refuse genetically modified food
- Recycle plastic, paper and glass

I'm doing my best to apply these rules in my life, not just saying it. It's little, but that multiplied by, it can make a big difference.

Catching up with technology

That's it ! We installed the Webcam Seb had for his birthday.
The problem we have now is to have our friends connected the same time as us !!
And of course, let them know we have it too !!

So, now we're ready ! Let's chat and see each other !

cuisine réunionnaise

If you feel like having some reunionan (made up this word) food, I mean, food from l'Ile de la Réunion, there is a restaurant in Toulouse : Les Mascareignes.

The owners are family with one of my collegue and she is the sister from the singer of Emile and Image, a famous french music band from the 80's. The restaurant have been visited by several famous people. You can see pictures from their evening in the restaurant on one wall. For example, there is one with JJ Goldman. So, if you're lucky, you might have dinner with several celebrities.
Anyway, the food is fairly good and it really reminds us of our wonderful honeymoon on the island. I would recommend you try the Planteur as apetizer, samoussas, vanilla gambas, banana-tatin-pie, and definitely their banana-rhum as a digestif ! This is a must-try !

Feel hungry now ? ;-)

Week-end pépére

which means, we had one of our first free week-end since we moved in Toulouse, and it was all relaxing, peaceful and lovely...

Major accomplishment : a nice 2-hours walk in the forest near Le Burgaud (North-West of Toulouse). We were kind of surprised to notice a different aspect between the forests in Normandy and those here. Here around Toulouse, we have smaller forests, smaller trees, dryer soils. The trees were mainly oaktrees which implies there must be a lot of squirrels, but we have'nt seen any, though probably heard some !
There were supposed to be also wild boars and roe-deers but we could only see resembling footprints.
There were also lots of brambles with excellent blackberries which we tasted on our way.
Only one regret, there were way too many insects flying unpleasantly nearby our ears and eyes... maybe they're less annoying another time of year...

We also practiced our english over the week-end with our "Friends" (Monica, Rachel, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe and Ross) ;-)

Looking for a house

We made a first step forward in the process of buying a house. We paid a visit to the real estate agent in Castelginest (where we live) to get a clearer idea of what we could afford. We had an estimation of how much the banks could lend.
I must admit we've been cold-showered... With the real-estate-market this high, we definitely can't afford the house of our dreams. Gone the swimmingpool... But let see the good side of it, we won't argue who'se going to mow the lawn !!!
Anyway, we have an appointment to visit a house on wednesday, we'll see...

Happy Birthday !

Today is Quentin's birthday. He's now two-year-old and he is my Godson.
We should have seen him and his parents of course this week but there had been a problem and they had to rush home from their vacation.
It's a shame, kids grow up so fast and we can't see each other much cause of distance and timetables... Anyway, I bought him a little radio-controlled car for his age. I hope he likes it.
Just need to mail it before he's 3 !!
